FOSTERING HEALTHY ACADEMIC COMPETITION

A Matric Excellence Awards ceremony, shining a spotlight on the incredible achievements of grade 12 learners from communities in the Madibeng Local Municipal area, recently took place. This initiative not only recognises the hard work and dedication of learners, but also provides them with valuable IT equipment for their future academics or business endeavour, and as a motivation to strive for excellence.

At the event, De Wildt Solar presented laptops and certificates to outstanding learners from underprivileged communities in the area. The top 10 performing schools and top achievers per listed subjects were also recognised with certificates.

“We acknowledge the efforts made by the Grade 12 learners in our community and through this programme, we hope to give them a head start by providing an essential tool that can be used in academics and in business. Furthermore, the programme also aims to recognise teachers and parents for their efforts and fosters healthy competition as a driver for change,” explained Julius Nong, Community Projects Officer for De Wildt Solar, which funds this programme in partnership with the Department of Education, the Madibeng Local Municipality, and other local investors.

In addition to this, De Wildt Solar also granted tablets to nine exceptional learners from three high schools in Mmakau and Mothotlung. The solar plant also partnered with Bushveld Vametco Alloys and Sibanye Stillwaters, who awarded the learners with laptops, bursaries, and vouchers, as well as tertiary education funding.

“I would like to thank the Department of Education for all the camps they organised and all the money they invested in ensuring that we get quality education. I am also grateful to De Wildt Solar and Bushveld Vametco for recognising me. I hope you continue to spread the brilliant work that you do to everyone who comes after me,” expressed Lesego Makgala, a top achieving student and beneficiary of this programme.

This programme forms part of the solar project’s Socio-Economic Development programme, with the purpose of stimulating academic achievements in schools across the area and motivating future Matriculants to do their best in order so that they can pursue further studies at Tertiary Institutions.
