Learning has become more enjoyable for young children across communities in Madibeng Local Municipality, thanks to the learning resources and equipment provided to a number of Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres, that are helping improve learning and literacy skills.
In order to cater to the developmental phases of children attending the ECD’s and to create a fun learning environment in disadvantaged communities, De Wild Solar funded this initiative as part of the solar plant’s socio-economic development initiative, which has a core focus on education and youth development.
“Through this support, we hope to increase literacy levels of the children in the various ECDs, enhance creativity and communication skills, as well as improve problem-solving skills. Additionally, this will help children develop fine and gross motor skills whilst stimulating their young minds and imagination,” said Julius Nong, De Wildt Solar’s Community Operations Project Officer.
Moreover, this programme provides caregivers with the education and training they need, in order to maximise efficacy within the classroom.
“This donation of play equipment and learning resources is essential for children’s growth and development. Added to this, practitioners have been equipped with two days of training on how to effectively use the donated equipment to achieve the ideal developmental outcome for the children,” added Nong.
The need for this support was identified through a needs analysis, to assess the early childhood development environment in areas of Madibeng Local Municipality. As a result, this support will help alleviate the burden on struggling ECDs, and further aid children in this essential stage of schooling.
“We are very happy and grateful to have received this support, which has made teaching and learning easier. Not only has this support benefited the children but also the parents and practitioners. Children come to school eager to learn and go home excited to tell their parents what they’ve learned,” concluded Betty, ECD Forum Chairperson at Boitumelo ECD centre.
